Gotham Gala FAQ: Do You Lose Weight On A Juice Fast?

On Thursday night, I was delighted to celebrate with Gotham Magazine at their 10th Annual Gala. I was happy to be at the event welcoming guests with a Green Lemonade After Dark cocktail called Midnight Lemonade. The cocktail was a flirty twist on the Master Cleanse lemonade tonic and featured fresh lemon juice, Agave nectar, cayenne pepper, a splash of soda and a touch of organic vodka. The cocktail was quite popular among party go-ers and inspired a great deal of conversation about juice fasting and weight loss. I wanted to share just a few of my thoughts on this frequently asked question below. I also included a few photos from the Gala on Thursday. Hope you all had a great weekend.

  1. A nutritious juice fast can actually do great things for you – if done correctly. It’s all about preparation. Learn more here. This sample menu may also help you think more about how to eat when it comes to preparing for a juice fast.
  2. During a short juice fast expect to lose a lot of water weight first. Then work to keep it off by eating clean. If you go back to your normal diet of white breads, sweets, sodas, and other processed foods after the juice fast, expect to regain any weight lost.
  3. For best results to keep weight off after a juice fast try this: Enjoy lots of raw fruits and vegetables, a healthy amount of cooked veggies, and a lesser amount of more calorie dense cooked starchy veggies (such as beans, sweet potatoes and squash), grains and nuts. Compliment your veggie-centric meals with meats, fish and dairy rather than enjoying them as the main feature. (Why? Veggie centric meals are naturally cleansing and rejuvenating.) This menu may give you some ideas to get started.
  4. Remember, a juice fast, is not the only way to lose weight quickly. Juicing until dinner is a more approachable and enjoyable way (in my opinion) for most people to enjoy the path to losing a few pounds on just juice. These gentle cleansing options are also a great way to achieve healthy and sustainable weight loss results (while helping you to physically and emotionally feel like good progress towards your weight loss goals are being achieved).
  5. Ultimately, eating a clean, consistent diet helps you actually lose weight (and keep it off) more than a juice fast itself. It just takes practice and a solid effort toward consistent eating. It’s definitely not always easy. Some days you’ll find that you fall off the healthy eating horse – maybe you’ll find you’re having donuts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don’t let those days get you down. The next meal or the next day is a new opportunity.
