Freshly Squeezed: Reader Questions Answered

I always find it helpful to hear the kinds of questions other beauties are asking. I hope you do too. These are a few of the most frequently asked questions around the lemonade stand this week. How about you? Anything on your mind this week? Share your thoughts with us!

  • Q: I would like to do a juice fast, but work 12 hour days beginning at 7am everyday. What juices would you recommend for lasting energy?
These are some of my favorite juicer recipes for energy.

  • Q: How should I make my fresh juices in advance and carry them to work?

As many of you beauties know, I recommend making juice at home with one of these easy-to-clean, easy-to-use juicers from Breville. Breville brand juicers, and most home juicers outside of the premier Norwalk family of juicers, taste best immediately after they are made. If it is not possible to enjoy your juice immediately after it is made, many beauties I know will freeze it and enjoy it later. Personally, I don’t love the taste of fresh juice after it has thawed – though I have been known to choke down a few mugs on occasion. Generally, if I’m going to prepare some juice in advance I will freeze the juice in an ice cube tray. Then when I’m craving some juice I will toss the juice cubes into a blender with some pure water or coconut water.

  • Q: Any suggestions for juice containers best way to detox that are good for travel??

I tend to default to a good, wide mouth Sigg water bottle or a Ball jar when I travel with fresh pressed juice or a smoothie. For years, my husband took a green smoothie to work in a travel coffee mug from Starbucks. Be careful if you plan to freeze your juice, however. I’ve had Ball jars crack and explode in my freezer on numerous occasions. You could always travel with your “juice” cubes and then let them melt throughout the course of the day instead of risking a freezer explosion.

  • Q: Do I have to drink only green juices to cleanse?

Health beauties love many varities of rich fruit and vegetable juices. But the juices they drink the most often are green juices. Green juices are rich in chlorophyll, a natural detox agent. Get the low down on green based juices here. Also remember beauties, there is a broad spectrum when it comes to cleansing with food. Gentle cleansing can include something as simple as eating a Meatless Monday Recipes few more organic fruits and vegetables or celebrating a meatless day one day a week. Outside of food, of course, you can also cleanse your body from the outside in. Consider using a more natural brand of cosmetics, or perhaps a moisturizing lotion or hand soap. Some people believe that limiting toxic personal relationships is also a form of cleansing.

  • Q: Any suggestions for alternatives to kale to make green juices at home?

At the moment, these are some of my favorite juicer recipes with kale. For a little variety, you could easily substitute kale for spinach or Swiss chard. A few beet greens, watercress, parsley and even a touch of basil would also add a nice twist to your juice.

  • Q: Do you drink green juices, Noelle, when you are not on a cleanse?

In the summertime, when its hot, I crave green juices all the time. But in the winter, I don’t necessarily crave them as much. Sometimes I also don’t have a lot of time to make my own juice, so I will make a green smoothie like this instead. I always try and eat a small salad with my lunch and dinner meals, though, whether it be during the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Leafy green salads are full of chlorophyll, a natural detox agent. Detox gurus also believe leafy greens act as a buffer to protect your bod from external crud (say air pollution) which can accumulate and weigh on your mood and your energy overtime. The secret is getting creative with your dressings to keep from getting bored of these leafy greens. You might consider trying one of these salads.

  • Q: I’d like to make smoothies when I travel, is there a good travel blender you could recommend?

This travel blender is super easy to Tribest Personal Blender Review use and a breeze to clean. It’s also light and easy to travel with. I have even taken this blender on the plane with me.

  • Q: Can you recommend a good juicer?

I always recommend a juicer from Breville. If you are looking for a good, cheap juicer to get you started with juicing I would recommend this $100 juicer from Breville. It’s compact and efficient and simple to clean. You might also find this article on juicers helpful.

Hi D, if you'd like to cut back on the fresh apple juice in your juices, but still keep a touch of sweetness, give a dash of Stevia a try. Are you familiar with Stevia? I would bulk up your juices with a little bit of cucumber and celery also, if you do scale back on your apple juice.

  • Hi. I've had green lemonade (just kale, apples, and whole lemon - 8 oz.) going on 3 days now. I  was just wondering how often I can drink it without worrying about it throwing of my body's acidity level. Thanks. - Dee
