Should You Do A Cleanse?

These days everyone and their brother is doing some sort of “cleanse”. But the last time you tried to do a 3 day liquid only juice cleanse, you ended up bingeing half way through the second day. “Cleansing is the pits, and way too extreme”, you say. Well, that’s just because you haven’t been introduced to the concept of “cleansing” in the right way.

Don’t waste your money on herbal “cleanse” products…

Skip the cleansing hype and the media extremism today. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on herbal “cleanse” products nor do you need to starve yourself for days on water and lemon. Sure some of you may want to do an occasional juice fast as a reset for a periodic indulgence, but if you’re not up for that don’t worry; A juice fast is not the only way to reset and cleanse.

You can also stop worrying about doing 15 different “organ-specific” cleanses.

A whole body cleanse can be accomplished in an enjoyable, natural way by eating more natural, real, whole foods each day.

raw fruits and vegetables to detox naturally

… fresh fruit, vegetables and leafy greens are much more effective

For best whole body cleanse results, the key is to incorporate more naturally cleansing and detoxifying foods such as uncooked vegetables, fruit and leafy greens. Fresh pressed juices and green smoothies are also a fabulous addition. But you don’t want to have too many of these naturally cleansing and detoxifying raw fruits and vegetables all at once. If you are not used to eating this way, your body will be overwhelmed by the cleansing and detoxifying power of these foods.

Steamed foods, along with small quantities of quality meats, fish and dairy – acting as garnish to your daily meals – keeps detoxification in check and provides emotional comfort and longer-term satisfaction to keep this way of eating sustainable. Beans, nuts and grains can and should also be enjoyed in moderation.

5 easy ways to increase your body’s daily detoxification work
  1. Try to limit your sugar intake

Ideally, you do want to try and tone down the amount of sugar in your diet everyday. Skip the donuts and the cakes, except for special occasions, and introduce yourself to a piece or two of a nice dark chocolate (>70% cocoa) instead. You’ll be surprised at how satisfying a nice dark chocolate can be.

  2. Eat a light, but nutritious breakfast
For breakfast keep an open mind to a fresh pressed juice or a green smoothie. A bowl of fruit is also a nice option. A light, nutritious breakfast in the morning actually helps the body to ramp up its cleansing and detoxification work.

  3. Re-introduce yourself to leafy greens
If you don’t love spinach or lettuces at this point, start with a green smoothie. Green smoothies are terrific, because they contain at least one serving of leafy greens but they taste only like the sweet fruit they are paired with. This classic green smoothie is a favorite of mine.

  4. If you enjoy salads, try and re-introduce a small one at the beginning of each of your lunch and dinner meals. Leafy green salads are full of vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and blood alkalinizers for superior health and energy. These nutrients help with the awakening and releasing of toxins in the body as well as aid in the rebuilding of the body’s terrain. This also includes a rebuilding of the biological terrain of the colon where the majority of the body’s immune system is housed. Think more energy and glowing skin.

  5. Enjoy coffee in moderation

For many of us coffee is more of a morning ritual than anything. It’s fine to continue to enjoy that morning cup of Joe, but try and keep it to one cup. (Don’t be surprised if overtime this coffee love fades as you eat more naturally energizing foods.) If you use sweetener consider switching to an all natural sweetener such as Stevia. Stevia is a plant native to Central and South America. It is 300 times as sweet as sugar, but has zero calories. A little Stevia goes a long way. I recommend the Nu Naturals brand of Stevia in powdered form.

  6. Be open to a few more meat-free meals

For best whole body cleanse results, the key is to incorporate more naturally cleansing and detoxifying foods such as uncooked vegetables, fruit and leafy greens. Fresh pressed juices and green smoothies are also a fabulous addition. Eating a good quality piece of meat or fish is fine, but think of them more as garnish to your meals rather than the main course. Veggies (both steamed and roasted as well as uncooked) should ideally start to dominate the center of your plate at lunch and dinner times, then the quality meats and fish as compliments.
