The Rachel Ray Show and Detox Diets

This week on the Rachel Ray Show, Rachel Ray introduced Maria – a 22 year old woman frustrated with the effects of a “detox diet” she recently completed. Her detox plan consisted of taking 1-2 herbal supplements a day while continuing to eat the same diet she had been eating prior to wanting to make a change.

Here is a further look into Maria’s detox expectations, and the truth about what it takes to do a successful and healthy cleanse.

Maria’s Detox Diet Expectations

Maria explained to the audience on the Rachel Ray Show that she had the following expectations when it came to a detox:

  1. By taking an herbal detox supplement 1-3x a day, she expected to keep eating what she normally eats and lose weight
  2. Everyone’s doing a detox she said. She hoped a detox would allow her to rebound from a period of overindulgence and kick start weight loss
  3. Maria also wanted a detox to help her with her low energy levels and also help her to regain a healthy glow
  4. There are may detox pill programs on the market, she thought a detox pill was required for detoxification.


The Reality About Detox Diets

Here is the reality about a healthy and successful detox diet where the focus is on rebuilding and repairing your digestive tract. After all, a healthy digestive tract is the key to good health, good energy, a good mood and it can have a slimming impact on your body.

  1. A dietary change is also required on a detox plan. Unfortunately Maria can’t simply take a pill and keep eating what she has been eating if she wants to improve her energy levels and kick start weight loss. A shift toward a diet rich in living whole foods is important.

  2. There is a broad spectrum of HEALTHY detox diets. Yes, these days cleansing is in vogue – but many people are not following a healthy cleansing practice which is right for them. Not one detox plan is right for everyone, just as one diet is not right for everyone. In the spectrum of healthy detox diets and cleanses, all the variations involve eating more fresh vegetables, leafy greens and fruit. Some however, on the more progressive end of the cleansing spectrum, involve drinking a greater quotient of freshly pressed vegetable juices, smoothies and energy soups. Other programs along this spectrum contain a greater quotient of whole, uncooked foods paired with some lightly steamed or roasted foods to keep the pace of detoxification work in check. There are many different levels, but one thing is consistent across all healthy detox diet plans, you need to go at a gentle pace which is right for you and you do not need to purchase expensive herbal supplements and harsh laxatives to detox.

  3. Detox diet plans can help kickstart weight loss Combined in the right fashion, a detox will allow you to rebound from a period of overindulgence and kick start weight loss. One thing many people misunderstand however is that even though a healthy, naturally cleansing lifestyle is not about calorie counting, awareness of portion size and frequency of eating is always in vogue. You can’t be eating all the time, and you can’t be eating crazy amounts of food if you want to give your body some time to focus on healing and repair work.

  4. Pills are also not required in a healthy detox. A good probiotic is nice however to enjoy every day (even when you’re not on a cleanse). A multivitamin may also be considered. But harsh laxatives should be avoided.
