Sunrise Over Montauk + 1 Day Whole Foods Cleanse

Activity around the marinas in Montauk begins early. Both recreational and commercial fishermen were up enjoying sunrise mugs of coffee shortly after 5am. Here are a few early shots taken at sunrise this morning, just as the docks out here in Montauk were starting to come alive with activity.

As many of you know this month of July we are celebrating the broad spectrum of whole body cleansing. Along this spectrum there is something for everyone. On the more progressive end of this detox spectrum, of course, are days filled with fresh pressed juices and smoothies. However a gentle whole body cleanse can also include lightly steamed or roasted foods to balance out the detoxification work inspired by raw foods and fresh juices. A few of you emailed me over the weekend asking for a more user-friendly “1 Day Whole Foods Cleanse” (or as Julie wrote “something for busy people who may not have time to make fresh pressed juices this week”) that could be enjoyed one day during this upcoming week. Check out my sample suggestion below.

And if you are inspired to shake some poor eating habits or perhaps you want to take your “cleansing” and “resetting” this summer a little further, enter to win a 21-day whole-foods cleanse giveaway from Dr. Junger’s Clean Program here. This at home kit includes supplements and a pre-packaged breakfast and dinner shake.

1 Day Whole Foods Cleanse

Serves 1, ~1400 calories*

The goal with this day is to focus on simple foods while practicing mindful eating and limited snacking to give your body time to focus on its healing and repair work. Digestion requires a lot of energy!

Upon rising
A glass or two of water with lemon

Breakfast
2 cups fresh blueberries and 1 cup raspberries (perfect right now)
1 small cup of green tea or 1 small decaffeinated coffee

Enjoy herbal tea or water with lemon (hot or cold or even room temperature) throughout your afternoon.

Lunch
2 cups baby spinach greens (organic if possible), with 1/2 cup chopped cucumber, 1/2 cup chopped tomato, 1/2 cup sliced red, green or yellow pepper and 1 serving (1″ cube) of Feta cheese. You might also consider adding the kernels from 1 ear of raw corn. (Raw corn is actually a vegetable and becomes a starch when cooked). Dress with 1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, squeeze of lemon, freshly ground sea salt and pepper. Follow up lunch with one Lara Bar.

Enjoy herbal tea or water with lemon (hot or cold or even room temperature) throughout your afternoon.

Dinner
Start with a small baby spinach salad with squeeze of lemon and freshly ground sea salt and pepper. Then enjoy this delicious gluten-free, detox-diet pizza topped with asparagus and summer squash.

Enjoy herbal tea or water with lemon (hot or cold or even room temperature) throughout your evening.

* Notes – The beauty of a natural, diet-free lifestyle grounded in whole foods means feeding your body nutritious foods that it knows how to fully recognize and eliminate. Calorie counting fades away. Nothing is wasted here because your body knows how to assimilate all the calories in raw live foods, all calories are used and nothing is “wasted” or stored as fat. However, mindful eating with an eye on portion control (think Buddha Bowl size) is always in vogue. I recognize of course, many of you are still trying to get a sense of portions as you transition to a more whole-foods centric lifestyle and so I have included a rough sense of calorie totals here. But our goal here is to move away from this style of portion control and frustration over time…
