Montauk Detox Breakfast: Dark Cherry + Cashew Soft Serve

Get your fill.

You bought some frozen, organic, dark cherries from the grocery store. You made this Dark Cherry Green Smoothie and you fell in love. You’re just really digging dark cherries right now, what can you say?

Share this cherry love with someone you care about in the form of this Dark Cherry + Cashew Soft Serve. Heck, sneak some fresh spinach in on someone you love in the process (trust me, they’ll never know). I plead guilty to liking this for breakfast out here in Montauk. (What is a detox breakfast?)

Dark Cherry + Cashew Soft Serve

Serving Size: 1, ~300 calories per serving

Ingredients

1/3 cup cashews, raw and unsalted if possible*
2 tablespoons of good maple syrup, honey or Stevia*
1/4 cup dark cherries, frozen
~ 1/3 cup filtered water
1 handful (or ~1 cup) fresh spinach
4-5 ice cubes

Directions

Place cashews, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup (or your sweetener of choice), cherries, spinach and ~1/3 cup of water with 4-5 ice cubes into a high powered blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. You may need to add a splash more water to facilitate blending depending on your blender. I enjoyed the extra tablespoon of maple syrup (for a total of two tablespoons), but if you prefer stick with one. Spoon into a dish and top with a frozen cherry or two. So frothy, cold and refreshing.

If you do not have a high powered blender, no worries! Simply place the cashews and ~1/3 cup of water (or a little more to facilitate blending) into a food processor first. Combine until you have a nutty paste. Add in the remaining ingredients and process until smooth and creamy.

Notes *:

  1. Stevia is a plant native to Central and South America. It is 300 times as sweet as sugar, but has zero calories. I find in this minty green lemonade, a little Stevia goes a long way. I recommend the Nu Naturals brand of Stevia in powdered form.
  2. Cashews in bulk: If you are looking for a good price on raw cashews in bulk (they store great in the freezer), Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have some good prices. Not near either one of those? Consider the prices here at iherb.com. If you are ordering from iherb they have some great free shipping promotions occasionally. And while you’re there consider a package of Dr. Ohhira’s probiotics (awesome for maintaining your body’s beautiful bliss and building a strong immune system). MUCH better than any probiotic “fortified” yogurts.

yes! please adjust the sweetness factor as you like. i think overtime as you begin to eat more raw foods (at least in my experience) my desire for sweetness has started to lessen somewhat. (i still have a sweet tooth tho!) I have not tried maple sugar, only maple syrup from yearly trips to VT....I love the addition of the chocolate powder. have you tried cacao (raw chocolate)? just wondering what you think of it.

Dark Cherry + Cashew Soft Serve has become a huge favorite in our new raw lifestyle. I double the recipe, but only add the 2 TBLs of Maple sugar - still think that should be 2 tsps... BUT this morning I added 1 TBL of organic chocolate powder = WOW!!!!!

It's quite interesting actually, I generally try to adhere to two main principles 1) eating proteins and starches/grains separately and 2) fruit in the am. I find that as a built in portion control I actually really enjoy the principles. And maybe it's mental, but I do feel a bit lighter and not bloated when I eat this way most often. Sometimes though if there is something I want to try with my husband or if Im traveling I don't stress about it too much. I think in the grand scheme of things consistent healthy eating is the most important and working through emotional eating (stress, boredom, tiredness etc) and even overeating. Let me know how it goes for you :>)

Hi, Noelle! I have a question regarding food combining. While you have been doing the cleanse, I have noticed you combining things that would be "bad combining" according to Natalia Rose's principles. Do you feel that is not necessary? Have you noticed anything negative due to the "bad combining?" I am on the fence regarding food combining so I was just wondering your opinion since I know you have mentioned food combining before on Green Lemonade. Thank you for turning my attention to the Clean Program!

Sounds great, I'll look forward to supplementing My Clean cleanse morning shake when I get to Montauk!
