Replenish Electrolytes with a Coconut Green Smoothie

In this twist on the Classic Green Smoothie I added coconut water to create a tropical twist. For those of you not familiar with coconut water, it has many wonderful health properties and is also a great resource for restoring your body’s electrolytes. Electrolytes support and enhance our body’s everyday functions. If we don’t get adequate levels, say after a tough workout we might not be operating at our best!

Coconut water is the natural juice found inside a young coconut. It is a clear juice with a slightly nutty flavor. Coconut water is different from coconut milk, which is made by boiling coconut water and shredded coconut together until foamy, then straining.

There are several good coconut waters on the market today. Zico brand coconut water and Vita Coco are two popular brands. These coconut water beverages have become very popular at yoga and fitness studios for students looking to replenish lost electrolytes after a workout session. They also make a nice, refreshing afternoon snack. Coconut water is also a great, all-natural replacement for sugary athletic drinks.

If you don’t have coconut water for this recipe, don’t worry, you can still use filtered water and just add a little extra shredded coconut to bring out more of a coconut taste.

How to make a Coconut Green Smoothie

Serving Size: 1

Ingredients
8 oz. coconut water
handful of baby spinach
1/2 sliced pear
1 tbsp of shredded coconut (shredded raw coconut is ideal from your health food market if you have access to some! Otherwise use a good unsweetened coconut that you have access to! Coconut can be stored in your freezer for future smoothies.)
handful of ice

Directions

Combine the ingredients listed above into a blender. Any blender will do, though a high power blender makes the smoothies even creamier and more delicious. Add water and ice to thin or thicken as desired. Make sure the ice is fully blended.
